Manila Water Co. Inc. is investing P37.3-billion in a three-river system wastewater masterplan designed to rehabilitate and protect natural waterways while providing its customers with the best sanitation and sewerage services.
The masterplan involves the construction of wastewater treatment facilities and sewer network that comply with regulatory and environmental standards across the rivers of Marikina, San Juan and Pasig as well as the Laguna Lake systems.
The wastewater projects will collect, convey and treat wastewater generated within their allotted catchment areas.
To support the Marikina river system, the San Mateo-Rodriguez and Quezon City East sewerage systems will cater to customers in portions of Marikina, San Mateo-Rodriguez, Antipolo and eastern portions of Quezon City at a combined project cost of P10.2 billion serving around 129,000 residents by 2046.
The Mandaluyong West, Quezon City South and San Juan South Sewerage System will cover portions of catchments draining towards the San Juan and Pasig River systems in a P20 billion project with capacity to treat 60 million liters expandable to 120 million liters of wastewater per day via a 53-kilometer sewer network.
The remaining segments of the north and south Pasig sewerage system will also be constructed to help protect the Pasig River system for a combined project cost of P2.8 billion with treatment provisions for households in Pasig and portions of Quezon City, Mandaluyong, Cainta and Taytay.
Manila Water said there is also a P1.6-billion Hinulugang Taktak sewerage system being put up in Antipolo City to treat 16 million liters of wastewater per day before releasing these into waterways.
Manila Water mainly serves customers in Makati, Pasig, Pateros, Marikina, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Taguig, some parts of Quezon City and Manila; and several towns in Rizal province that include Taytay, Teresa, Angono, Antipolo, Baras, Binangonan, Cainta, San Mateo and Rodriguez.
