The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Thursday bared plans to expand the country’s protected bike lane network to 2,400 kilometers by 2028 as envisioned in the Bike Lane Master Plan.
James Andres Melad, assistant secretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure, said the Bike Lane Master Plan outlines the agency’s projects to establish an active transport infrastructure promoting sustainable modes of transportation in key metropolitan cities.
The agency turned over this plan to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and local government units.
“This master plan represents months of tireless collaboration and careful planning. It is testament to our shared commitment to create an environment where people can move freely, safely and sustainably,” Melad said.
The DOTr, in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and other stakeholders, launched the Bike Lane Master Plan requiring a shift to active transport and the establishment of an integrated cycling infrastructures.
“The success of this master plan depends not only on the infrastructure we build, but also on the collective effort of all stakeholders. It calls for collaboration between government agencies, civil society, private sector partners, and most importantly, our citizens,” Melad said.
Serving as a guide towards a more comprehensive, inclusive and equitable bike lanes network development, the Bike Lane Master Plan, includes technical, institutional and information/education components among others that may be adopted by the LGUs.
The government has thus far already constructed 564 kilometers of bike lanes in Metro Cebu, Metro Manila and Metro Davao.
