Globe using Nokia equipment to ramp up 5G deployment

Nokia, now a B2B technology innovation leader, on Thursday bared rolling out a state-of-the-art, modular interleaved passive active antenna (IPAA) for Globe Telecom, Inc, across the southern islands of the Philippines to help accelerate 5G deployment in the region.

“We are thrilled that Nokia’s state-of-the-art products will be deployed in the Philippines. Our enduring pain points in site acquisition and TCO efficiency are being addressed by the features and design of the IPAA,” Joel Agustin, senior vice president and head of Network Planning and Engineering at Globe, said.

“Simplifying the rollout of 4G and 5G services will greatly improve our customer experience, especially in the southern region of the Philippines,” he added.

Nokia’s advanced IPAA, has a light, modular design and supports all 5G frequency bands in a single compact antenna, including the 2.6 GHz spectrum band. It has inherent capability to support other bands, which means investments are protected. They will also enable Globe to accelerate and simplify 4G/5G rollouts while delivering higher levels of network efficiency and performance as well as faster return on investment.

Nokia and Globe engineering teams also successfully trialed a Globe-specific variant of the IPAA in the field. The field test was carried out in Tantangan, South Cotabato in Mindanao, making Globe the first in the world to successfully test the 2.6 GHz IPAA+ equipment.

“We are delighted to partner with Globe Telecom on this deal that will see our state-of-the-art IPAA products being deployed in the Philippines. These products are lighter, more modular and cover all sub-6GHz 5G frequency bands,” Jeciel Nuyda, president at Nokia Shanghai Bell Philippines, said.

“We look forward to collaborating closely with Globe in this important deployment,” Nuyda added.

As of the first half of 2023, Globe has fired up 356 new 5G sites across the country, increasing its 5G outdoor coverage to 97.44 percent of the National Capital Region and 91 percent of key cities in Visayas and Mindanao.
