PetroWind’s Nabas wind farm starts transmitting power to Panay sub-grid

PetroWind Energy Inc., the renewable energy company of the Yuchengco Group, said Friday its Nabas wind power project in Aklan has started to export power from its Phase-2 expansion following requisite approvals from the Independent Energy Market Operator of the Philippines and the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines.

PetroWind is the service contractor of the Department of Energy for the wind project.

“We are pleased with the start of the commissioning of the Nabas wind power project Phase 2 as it delivers much needed power to the Panay sub-grid. This is the newest power station added to the system since the 2 January 2024 grid blackout and we congratulate PetroWind for this milestone,” said Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla.

“This commissioning testifies to the efforts of our private sector partners, working with the administration, to boost the country’s clean and renewable energy capacity in sustaining long-term economic growth particularly in northern Panay and Boracay,” he added.

Nabas wind farm’s power export to the grid was supplied by three 2.2-megawatt Vestas wind-turbine generators.

“We anticipate that this commissioning will eventually lead to the successful commercial operation of our Phase 2 expansion as the second wind power unit of PetroWind and the sixth renewable energy generating plant of PetroGreen Energy Corp. In supplying much needed electricity to Panay communities, we also look forward to the revenue stream from this investment,” said PetroGreen president and chief executive officer F.G. Delfin Jr.

Development Bank of the Philippines provided PetroWind with P1.8 billion loan in February last year to partially fund the development and construction of the project.

PetroGreen and publicly-listed PetroEnergy Resources Corp., both part of the Yuchengco Group, own a combined 60 percent equity interest in PetroWind while BCPG Wind Cooperatief U.A., a subsidiary of Thailand’s BCPG Public Company Ltd., owns the remaining 40 percent.
