Desludging for Sanitation: Manila Water’s commitment to a cleaner future

As the country approaches World Toilet Day on 19 November, Manila Water highlights the critical role of desludging in achieving global sanitation goals.

The United Nations recognizes this day to raise awareness about sanitation’s importance and to inspire action against the global sanitation crisis affecting 3.5 billion people who lack safe sanitation.

To meet Sustainable Development Goal 6—Clean Water and Sanitation—the UN emphasizes the need for safe management of household waste, particularly sludge and septage from septic systems.

Each month, Manila Water deploys vacuum tankers across designated barangays in Metro Manila and Rizal Province to provide essential desludging services at no extra cost. This initiative ensures that collected wastewater is treated at Manila Water’s Septage Treatment Plants before being safely discharged into local water bodies.

“Regular desludging services enhance environmental conditions, safeguard public health, and contribute to the UN SDGs,” says Jeric Sevilla, Director of Corporate Communication Affairs at Manila Water. “Sustainability is at our core, guiding our ongoing efforts to improve and expand our services.”

In November, Manila Water’s desludging trucks will visit various barangays, including locations in Quezon City, Manila, Pasig City, Makati, Taguig, Marikina, and several areas in Rizal Province. This initiative not only aims to improve sanitation but also reflects a commitment to a healthier environment for the communities served.Manila Water highlights the critical role of desludging in achieving global sanitation goals.
