Initial estimates of the damage caused by Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Kristine to the agriculture sector has risen to P6.20 billion, reflecting a 7.8 percent increase from the previous assessment of P5.75 billion, according to the latest data released by the Department of Agriculture (DA) on November 4.
The storm has affected approximately 143,065 farmers and fishers across 117,509 hectares of agricultural land. The DA reported that the most significant losses were in rice production, which accounted for P4.46 billion, translating to 239,302 metric tons from 107,820 hectares. Of this area, 64.39 percent experienced partial damage, while 35.61 percent suffered total destruction.
Other crops impacted include high-value crops amounting to 36,928 metric tons worth P865.09 million, with fisheries suffering losses of P665.01 million from 1,781 metric tons.
In response to the devastation, the DA mobilized assistance, including P541.02 million in agricultural inputs such as seeds and livestock medicines.
A P1 billion quick response fund has been set aside for rehabilitation efforts, along with rice stocks provided by the National Food Authority (NFA) for relief distribution. Additionally, a Survival and Recovery Loan Program offers P500 million in loans at zero interest for affected farmers.
Amid these challenges, FP Island Energy Corp. reported that its microgrid system in Caramoan, Camarines Sur, demonstrated remarkable resilience during the storm. The microgrid, which combines solar energy and a diesel generator, delivered uninterrupted electricity for over 600 residents even as winds reached up to 100 kilometers per hour.
Larry Evangelista, general manager of FP Island, noted that the microgrid, established in December 2021, sustained minimal damage during the storm, highlighting the effectiveness of renewable energy solutions in off-grid areas.
This development marks a significant improvement over previous conditions, where residents relied on limited diesel generators.
FP Island is a subsidiary of First Philippine Holdings, which focuses on electrifying remote areas, and is also affiliated with First Gen Corp., a leading clean energy provider in the Philippines.
