NGCP energizes Cebu-Bohol link to boost grid stability

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has successfully energized the 230-kilovolt (kV) Cebu-Bohol Interconnection Project (CBIP), marking a significant milestone in improving the resilience of the Bohol grid and enhancing the operational flexibility of the Cebu transmission system. The P19.76-billion project, first filed with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) in 2017 and given provisional approval in January 2022, aims to improve grid stability and provide a more reliable transmission network for the Visayas region.

The CBIP, with a total capacity of 1,200 megawatts, involves a complex infrastructure project connecting Argao in Cebu and Maribojoc in Bohol via 54.6 kilometers of submarine cables and 97.6 kilometers of overhead transmission lines supported by 179 towers. This new transmission line will not only improve the flow of power between the provinces but also serve as a contingency in the event of disruptions to the existing Leyte-Bohol line.

NGCP emphasized the importance of the project in providing long-term stability for the Visayan grid, forming part of a larger plan to create a 230kV loop connecting Leyte, Cebu, and Bohol. Despite challenges related to permitting and land acquisition, the project was completed thanks to the cooperation of local and national government agencies and stakeholders.

“The Cebu-Bohol Interconnection Project will improve transmission services and provide a more secure, reliable grid for the entire region,” NGCP said in a statement. The completion of the CBIP highlights the company’s commitment to strengthening the national grid and ensuring a more resilient energy infrastructure.
