Meralco and NNIC forge strategic partnership

The New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) and Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) have formalized a partnership aimed at modernizing the power infrastructure of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). The agreement, signed on December 9, focuses on providing sustainable and reliable energy solutions to meet the growing demands of the airport’s operations and ensure its readiness for the future of aviation.

The partnership addresses long-standing power reliability issues at NAIA, which have been caused by aging infrastructure and insufficient capacity. These challenges have impacted airport operations, passenger experience, and overall efficiency. The collaboration aims to modernize the airport’s power systems, improving operational efficiency and resilience.

“This partnership is key to empowering the tourism and travel industry, supporting economic growth, and enhancing the travel experience for millions of passengers,” said Manuel Pangilinan, chairman and CEO of Meralco. “We are helping transform NAIA into a world-class facility.”

Ramon Ang, president of NNIC, emphasized the importance of power reliability in the broader context of NAIA’s modernization efforts. “Alongside decongesting traffic, improving safety, and upgrading equipment, addressing power reliability is a priority in creating an airport that every Filipino can be proud of,” he said.

The partnership includes several key projects, such as the construction of a new 115 kV-34.5 kV GIS substation by Meralco, set for completion by December 2026. This will enhance power supply to NAIA’s terminals, complementing the existing substation and improving the airport’s resilience with additional transformer banks and underground feeders. Meralco will also implement an underground power distribution network and install a 4,900 kVA uninterrupted power supply system at critical airport locations to ensure seamless operations.

These initiatives are part of a broader modernization effort that aims to make NAIA more efficient, resilient, and capable of handling the growing demands of the aviation industry.
