SMC Infrastructure announced Tuesday that significant reductions in travel time are expected on the NAIA Expressway (NAIAx) and select sections of Skyway Stage 3, thanks to an increase in the speed limit to 80 kilometers per hour (kph). The new limits, set to take effect on January 15 for NAIAx and January 20 for Skyway Stage 3, follow a comprehensive study conducted by the company’s traffic safety managers.
The speed limit hike, from the current 60 kph, is aimed at improving traffic flow and efficiency for commuters. SMC chairman and CEO Ramon S. Ang emphasized that the change prioritizes safety while enhancing convenience for motorists.
“We’ve carefully studied this to ensure it benefits everyone, with safety at the forefront,” Ang said. This move complements ongoing upgrades to the NAIAx exit plazas, which are expected to reduce congestion and improve the overall travel experience.
However, for safety reasons, the 60 kph limit will remain in place on curved sections of both expressways. Ang explained that the design constraints of these areas, due to limited space and sharp curves, necessitate a slower pace to prevent accidents.
To enforce the new regulations, traffic patrols will be equipped with radar speed guns and will continue issuing citations for violations. Motorists are urged to comply with the speed limits to ensure everyone’s safety.
NAIAx connects major hubs like the NAIA terminals and Entertainment City, while Skyway Stage 3 links key areas from Balintawak to Alabang, providing faster access to Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
