The Department of Agriculture (DA) has rolled out a new initiative aimed at fostering sustainable livelihood opportunities across the Philippines through small-scale egg production. Signed by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. on 15 January 2025, the memorandum order (MO) outlines a nationwide program with a budget of P85.19 million.
The initiative, targeting 82 provinces, is designed to support agricultural communities by establishing chicken layer operations that will provide a steady, affordable source of protein through egg production. The DA emphasizes eggs as one of the most accessible sources of nutrition for Filipinos, making the project a key component of national food security efforts.
The program will supply beneficiaries—including farmers, community groups, and agricultural cooperatives—with essential infrastructure and resources to set up small-scale egg production facilities. Each participating group will receive a complete production module valued at P79,500, which includes battery layer cages, ready-to-lay pullets, feed, veterinary supplies, and necessary training and management support.
Of the total P85.19 million allocated, P71.71 million will fund the procurement of these modules, while the remaining P13.48 million will be dedicated to project management and training. The initiative aims to promote self-sufficiency and enhance the economic stability of farming communities nationwide.
The DA’s selection criteria for beneficiaries focus on food security needs, the community’s ability to sustain the project, and a commitment to training. Implementation will be carried out in cooperation with local government units and regional DA field offices.
This program is seen as a significant step towards strengthening the agriculture sector, improving livelihoods, and boosting local economies in rural areas, while ensuring a more stable and affordable supply of eggs across the country.
