The Philippines has become the third most-targeted country for web threats in 2024, according to global cybersecurity expert Kaspersky’s latest report. While the overall number of detected cyberattacks has decreased from the previous year, Filipino users are facing an alarming 42.3 percent attack rate, underscoring the country’s persistent vulnerabilities in the digital landscape.
In 2023, the Philippines ranked 4th globally, but this year, it moved up despite a drop in overall attacks. Kaspersky recorded over 14 million web threats in the past year targeting Filipino users. Notably, threats exploiting web browsers, plugins, and online platforms are becoming more sophisticated, including drive-by downloads and social engineering tactics.
Yeo Siang Tiong, Kaspersky’s general manager for Southeast Asia, stressed that while there is a decrease in total attacks, the country’s rise in the rankings highlights the evolving sophistication of cybercriminals. “It’s crucial for businesses and individuals to strengthen their cybersecurity defenses,” said Yeo, adding that cybersecurity should no longer be optional in today’s digital age.
To combat these threats, Kaspersky recommends individuals avoid downloading unverified apps, use multi-factor authentication, and stay vigilant against phishing and malware. For organizations, regular software updates, strong password policies, and behavior-based threat detection are essential strategies for mitigating advanced threats.
Kaspersky’s report serves as a reminder that, despite advancements in threat detection and prevention, constant vigilance and robust cybersecurity measures are critical to protecting Filipino users from growing digital risks.
