MICT expands capacity and enhances efficiency

The Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), the flagship operation of International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), is ramping up capacity and operational efficiency with substantial investments in infrastructure, equipment, and digital transformation. To accommodate increasing trade volumes, MICT is constructing Berth 8, designed for ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) up to 18,000 TEUs, which will boost its annual handling capacity by 200,000 TEUs, reaching a total of 3.5 million TEUs per year.

The expansion includes additional yard space, which will improve container maneuverability and optimize yard utilization. In line with sustainability goals, MICT is integrating eco-friendly technology, including new zero-emission rubber-tired gantries (RTGs), now complementing an 83 percent hybrid equipment fleet. The terminal is also planning electric trucks and EV charging stations as part of its commitment to reduce emissions by 26 percent per container by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Recent technological upgrades, such as automated gate operations with 14 lanes and optical character recognition (OCR) portals, have significantly reduced truck dwell times and expedited processing. Additionally, the introduction of the ICTSI App and e-wallet features offers real-time tracking and seamless payments, enhancing service speed and transparency for customers.

With these continued investments, MICT remains a critical player in the Philippines’ logistics sector, boosting the nation’s supply chain resilience and reinforcing its role as a key hub in global trade. The terminal is among the busiest and most efficient in the world, underscoring ICTSI’s commitment to delivering world-class service and sustainability.
