PetroEnergy begins construction of 40 MW solar facility in Isabela

PetroEnergy Resources Corp. (PERC), a publicly-listed energy firm, has started the construction of the 40-megawatt (MW) Limbauan solar facility in San Pablo, Isabela, marking a significant step in its renewable energy strategy. The project, being developed by PERC subsidiary PetroGreen Energy Corp. (PGEC) under BKS Green Energy Corp., is valued at P1.9 billion and set for completion later this year. When operational, the plant generates up to 59 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean energy annually, sufficient to power approximately 33,000 households and avoid 31,700 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

BKS Green Energy Corp., a joint venture between PGEC and Japan’s Taisei Corp., is tasked with the development of the solar plant. The project unfolds in two phases: the first phase features a 6-MW plant connected to the Isabela Electric Cooperative II (ISECO II) while the second phase involves a 34-MW facility linked to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) via a dedicated 4.73-kilometer transmission line connected to the 69-kiloVolt Tuguegarao-Cabagan line.

Maria Victoria Olivar, PGEC vice president for business development and commercial operations, highlighted the project’s broader economic impact. “In addition to increasing energy supply, we anticipate employing around 500 to 600 workers at the height of construction, partnering with our host LGUs for corporate social responsibility and environmental protection programs, and contributing to the overall economic and social progress of the Cagayan Valley region,” Olivar said.

The Limbauan solar farm project is part of PERC’s broader plan to expand its renewable energy footprint, following the successful operation of several other power projects, including the 32-MW Maibarara geothermal project, the 70-MW Tarlac solar farm, and wind projects in Aklan.

The Limbauan solar project also benefits from government incentives under the Green Energy Auction program and received a certificate of energy project of national significance in November. The addition of this facility will significantly bolster PERC’s renewable energy capacity and strengthen its position in the competitive energy market.

This development reflects a wider trend in the Philippine energy sector, with increasing investments in renewable sources as the country transitions toward a more sustainable energy future.
