Clark International Airport’s newly constructed passenger terminal building has received the prestigious EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) certification, underscoring its commitment to sustainable infrastructure. Awarded by the Philippine Green Building Initiative, Inc. (PGBI), this certification reflects the facility’s innovative design and efficient resource usage, positioning the terminal as a leading example of green building in the Philippines.
The EDGE certification, developed by the International Finance Corp. (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, is globally recognized and applied in over 170 countries. It evaluates building designs based on their energy efficiency, water conservation, and the environmental impact of construction materials. The Clark terminal’s design met global standards for green building, focusing on cost-effective and environmentally responsible strategies.
The new terminal is projected to achieve significant resource savings, including 21 percent less energy consumption, a 26 percent reduction in water usage, and a 54 percent decrease in embodied energy from building materials, compared to a typical local design. These figures demonstrate that sustainable design can be both environmentally beneficial and commercially viable.
Noel Manankil, president and CEO of Luzon International Premiere Airport Development Corporation (LIPAD), the operator of Clark International Airport, emphasized the terminal’s role in combining world-class comfort with environmental responsibility: “This certification proves that we can offer world-class comfort and efficiency without compromising our commitment to the environment.”
The terminal incorporates several advanced sustainability features, including high-performance glass, an insulated roof, demand-controlled ventilation, and smart metering technologies that optimize energy use. Water efficiency measures include the installation of low-flow water closets and urinals. Additionally, the use of low-impact construction materials, such as reinforced concrete floor slabs and precast concrete exterior walls, further aligns the terminal with environmentally conscious building practices.
This EDGE certification not only positions Clark International Airport as a leader in green infrastructure but also signals a growing commitment within the Philippines’ aviation sector to integrate sustainable practices into major commercial developments.
