The combined impact of Typhoon Bising and the southwest monsoon (Habagat) has damaged the equivalent of P1.34 million to the agriculture sector, the Department of Agriculture said on Monday.
The damage, affecting 90 farmers across 96 hectares of farmland, resulted in the loss of 38 metric tons (MT) of crops. Rice sustained the most significant blow, with 93 hectares damaged and a 37 MT production loss valued at P1.25 million. Corn losses followed at P85,000 from three hectares, while high-value crops like lowland vegetables saw minimal losses of P1,000 over 0.1 hectares.
Regions hit include Central Luzon, Calabarzon, and Western Visayas, though DA officials warn that figures may rise as field assessments and validations continue.
The agency said it is actively coordinating with regional field offices and other government units to assess impacts, monitor market prices, and deploy support. Interventions include seed distribution, access to a Quick Response Fund for rehabilitation, and zero-interest loans of up to P25,000 through the Agricultural Credit Policy Council. Insured farmers will also receive compensation via the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp.
The damage underscores the increasing vulnerability of the sector to extreme weather, pressing the need for stronger climate resilience policies and expedited disaster response mechanisms.
