MRT-7 facilities not to blame for Batasan floods

The MRT-7 Project Management Office (PMO) on Tuesday rejected claims that its facilities near Batasan Station on Commonwealth Avenue are responsible for recent flooding in the area. In a statement, MRT-7 PMO said that all structures, including columns and footings, were built outside drainage lines and in accordance with approved engineering plans.

A previously raised concern about a manhole was reviewed and found, through design simulations and site inspections, not to obstruct water flow. While earlier construction phases did affect a section of the drainage system, this was coordinated with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and fully restored, as certified by the DPWH Quezon City 1st District Engineering Office in March 2025.

Following the latest flood, MRT-7 engineers discovered heavy clogging at the drainage outlet caused by plastic waste and debris—likely the main contributor to the flooding. During a recent interagency meeting with the DPWH and MMDA, MRT-7 requested documentation proving any project-related obstruction; none has been submitted to date.

MRT-7 PMO urged for a unified approach to addressing Metro Manila’s chronic flooding, often linked to poor waste disposal and neglected drainage systems. Through San Miguel Corporation’s Better Rivers PH program, MRT-7 is supporting river cleanup initiatives that have already removed over 8.5 million metric tons of waste.

The agency reiterated its support for MMDA, DPWH, and local government efforts toward sustainable drainage, improved waste management, and flood resilience.
