PLDT, Smart expand anti-cable theft campaign

Telecom giant PLDT Inc. and its wireless arm Smart Communications, Inc. have launched the nationwide expansion of their barangay-based asset protection initiative, aimed at curbing cable theft and safeguarding telecom infrastructure. Initially piloted in Makati City, the campaign has now reached key areas such as Pangasinan, Davao, and Cebu, with more rollouts planned.

The initiative, led by PLDT Group’s Asset Protection and Security Risk Governance (APSRG) Group in coordination with local government units and police, addresses the growing issue of copper cable theft and network vandalism. In 2024 alone, nearly 1,000 incidents were recorded, with copper cable losses accounting for 91 percent of total material losses — some areas in Manila report theft every three days.

PLDT chief operating officer Butch G. Jimenez emphasized the broader impact: “Protecting telco infrastructure is not just about keeping the network running, it’s about enabling progress.” The campaign is positioned as part of PLDT’s commitment to digital inclusion, economic development, and national resilience.

Local rollouts featured community training on anti-theft laws, reporting protocols, and cybersecurity under the #BeCyberSmart initiative. Security kits were distributed to support barangay patrols. In Dagupan, Davao, and Cebu, PLDT and Smart collaborated closely with barangay leaders and the PNP to mobilize grassroots efforts in protecting towers, fiber lines, and network assets.

PLDT and Smart leaders, including VP Leo A. Gonzales and APSRG heads Col. Wilfredo Gonio, Jose Rainier Mendoza, Jose Carlos Oliver, and Nicomedes Juezan Jr., underscored the strategic value of local partnerships in sustaining infrastructure and service continuity.

The initiative aligns with PLDT’s broader strategy of enabling equitable digital access and supporting UN Sustainable Development Goal 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
