The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said fish from Bataan, Bulacan, Pampanga, Batangas and Metro Manila, particularly from Navotas, Parañaque and Las Piñas, were found safe for human consumption no matter the oil spilled in areas close to the Manila Bay.
The BFAR said only fish samples from Cavite are deemed unsafe for consumption based on sensory tests.
Fish samples have been analyzed for traces of oil and grease and the presence of harmful contaminants as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Tests are important in ensuring the fish caught in potentially affected areas are free from contaminants and safe for public consumption.
The BFAR said tests for traces of oil and grease first reported on Monday consistently showed the sampled fish and shellfish from sampling sites in Bataan, Bulacan and Pampanga as free from contamination.
PAH concentrations on samples collected from Bataan and Bulacan also posed no significant risk to public health.
Similarly, fish and shellfish samples from Navotas, Manila, Parañaque and Las Piñas as well as fish samples from Batangas, particularly in Nasugbu, Lian and Calatagan, were all found free from contaminants.
The BFAR, however, emphasized that in Cavite, fish and shellfish samples remain unsafe for human consumption.
