Energy stakeholders in Aklan are optimistic about the province’s power supply, following the recent approval of crucial energy infrastructure projects. The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has given the green light to two major initiatives: the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ (NGCP) grid enhancement project and the expansion of PetroWind Energy Inc.’s (PWEI) Nabas wind power project.
Selwyn Ibarreta, Aklan provincial administrator, said the commissioning of PWEI’s Nabas-2 wind farm earlier this year, along with the completion of the 138kV Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay transmission line next year, would support Aklan’s transition to a first-class provincial status. “I am confident these projects will fuel Aklan’s growth, attracting investments, creating jobs, and boosting the local economy,” Ibarreta said. “Reliable power is key to driving business activity and improving social services for residents.”
The P4.2 billion Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay transmission project seeks to end power line and submarine cable capacity issues and improve power distribution not only for Aklan but also for Panay Island and the wider Visayas region. The upgrade is expected to enhance transmission efficiency and further support the Nabas-2 wind farm’s energy contribution.
Local officials are also hopeful that the projects will support key public infrastructure developments, including the new health center, a tourism office, and a new terminal at the Boracay airport set for completion in 2026. Johann Ken Juguan, Nabas municipal planning officer, stressed the importance of reliable energy in these efforts.
Ariel Gepty, acting general manager of Aklan Electric Cooperative (AKELCO), underscored the importance of these initiatives in reducing power interruptions that affect local businesses, particularly small enterprises. “Timely completion of these projects is vital for maintaining business operations and fostering economic growth in Aklan,” Gepty said.
