In a move aimed at safeguarding thousands of Filipino travelers this Holy Week, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon has signed an interagency agreement targeting sea travel overloading and introduced a new electronic ticketing system at Batangas Port to ensure safer, more efficient journeys.
“I signed a joint memorandum circular between PPA, MARINA, the Coast Guard, and the DOTr on anti-overloading for sea travel,” Dizon said during his inspection of the Batangas Port. “The most important thing, especially during this time when there are so many travelers, is the safety of our countrymen.”
The newly signed circular mobilizes the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and Department of Transportation (DOTr) to tighten controls and coordination across all points of sea travel.
Under the directive, PPA will oversee efficient port operations, while the PCG will strictly enforce weight limits on vessels based on passenger and vehicle load. MARINA, meanwhile, is tasked with imposing penalties on shipping companies that violate overloading rules.
“The government is serious about this,” Dizon emphasized. “We will not compromise, we will not risk the safety and security of our travelers.”
To support these safety efforts, the DOTr also launched an e-ticketing system at Batangas Port. This innovation allows passengers to buy tickets through automated kiosks within the terminal, reducing long lines and minimizing the risk of excessive ticket sales that contribute to overloading.
“E-ticketing will help a lot to avoid overload,” Dizon said. “Once e-ticketing is in place, we will be able to monitor if there is too much ticket sales, and stop it.”
Aside from new safety protocols, the transport chief also highlighted recent upgrades at the Batangas Port passenger terminal building (PTB). These include cleaner restrooms, a covered walkway for passengers, prayer and nursing rooms, as well as added conveniences like luggage trolleys and a shuttle service for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
These initiatives, rolled out just in time for Holy Week, reflect a coordinated government push to ensure Filipino travelers reach their destinations safely and comfortably.
“Everything we’re doing is for the welfare of our travelers,” Dizon said.
