The Light Rail Manila Corp. said the initial phase of the nearly 12-kilometer LRT Cavite Extension is scheduled to begin commercial operations 15 months from this point forward or by September next year.
“The first five stations of the LRT Cavite Extension will start operations by September 2024,” Juan Alfonso, LRMC president and chief executive, said.
This is a month earlier than the announcement the company made on 23 February saying the new line system will start operations by the fourth quarter of 2024.
The project is reported 83 percent completed. As of March, the Redemptorist Station was 56 percent completed, the MIA Station at 61 percent, Asia World at 51 percent, Ninoy Aquino Station at 55 percent and the Dr. Santos Station at 60 percent.
The remaining stations between Las Piñas and Niog are scheduled to become fully-operational by 2027.
The 11.7-kilometer, 8-station LRT-1 Cavite Extension Project will connect Baclaran in Parañaque City to Bacoor, Cavite.
Once completed, the extension will reduce travel time between Baclaran and Bacoor, Cavite to just 25 minutes, from 1 hour and 10 minutes at the moment and increase LRT-1’s capacity from 500,000 to 800,000 passengers daily.
LRMC won the bidding for the project and took over the operation of LRT Line 1 on Sept. 12, 2015. LRT Line 1 runs from Baclaran in Pasay City to Munoz in Quezon City.
Since taking over LRT-1 operations and maintenance in 2015, the LRMC has invested over P30 billion in capital improvement projects to steadily improve the existing LRT-1 system and make substantial progress with the construction of the Cavite Extension.
