Partners crafting climate change adaptation strategies

Power firm First Gen Corp. has partnered with the Climate Change Commission (CCC) to help communities and local government units (LGUs) prepare climate change adaptation and mitigation plans and strategies.

Under a memorandum of agreement signed early this week, the partners agreed on a number of commitments, including the training of key stakeholders using CCC’s Communities for Resilience (CORE) modules.

CORE modules include a background on national and international climate change policies and frameworks.

Both also committed to enhance the scope of First Gen’s flagship climate change information, education and communication (IEC) program, called Create for the Climate, by adding to the First Gen IEC program a training component on localized climate risk profiling and climate change adaptation and mitigation.

CCC Secretary Robert Borje and First Gen president Francis Giles Puno signed the agreement also to strengthen climate adaptation and mitigation initiatives of First Gen’s partner-communities and LGUs as well as promote their science- and evidence-based risk assessments.

Under the partnership, First Gen’s host municipalities will also be provided with guidance and technical assistance in the formulation and enhancement of the Local Climate Change Action Plan (LCCAP).

The LCCAP will help LGUs access the People’s Survival Fund (PSF) to finance LGU-led climate adaptation programs.

CCC also committed to organize for selected officials and personnel of First Gen’s partner-communities capacity development trainings related to LCCAP development and PSF proposal development.

First Gen has a combined capacity of 3,492 megawatts with a portfolio including natural gas, geothermal, hydroelectric, wind and solar power capacities.
