Lance Gokongwei to sit on BPI advisory council

Bank of the Philippine Islands, the country’s third largest lender by assets, announced Thursday the appointment of independent director Janet Guat Har Ang as interim chairman of its risk management committee and the appointment of Lance Gokongwei to the bank’s advisory council.

The appointment of Gokongwei to the advisory council is apparently in preparation for the entry of the president and chief executive officer of JG Summit Holdings Inc. into BPI’s board.

The Gokongwei group recently became the second largest shareholder in BPI following the merger of Robinsons Bank with the country’s third largest lender by assets.

Meantime, Ang will replace Octavio Victor Espiritu, a non-executive board director of BPI who will remain as member of the risk management committee (RMC). The membership of the committee will be reduced to three from five. The other member of the RMC is former finance secretary and independent BPI director Cesar Purisima.

Ang is currently chairwoman of SISTIC.com and independent director at Singapore Press Holdings Limited. She spent 37 years with IBM Singapore and was a member of the IBM Industry Academy. She is a veteran in the technology industry and has lived and worked in Japan and China for over a decade and  graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration (Honors) from the National University of Singapore.
