LRT 1 Cavite Extension project on track to a late-2024 completion

Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) on Thursday said it remains on track towards completing Phase 1 of the 11.7-kilometer LRT-1 Cavite Extension project by the fourth quarter of 2024.

Since starting the construction in September 2019, the LRMC already achieved a progress rate of 82.7 percent as at end-March this year on both civil and rail system works.

The viaduct was completed in February 2022, although the stations construction on architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and safety works are ongoing. In terms of rail systems, the trackwork and overhead catenary installation are almost complete.

The construction of five new stations are in various stages of development, with the Redemptorist Station already 56 percent complete, the MIA Station 61 percent complete, Asia World 51 percent complete, Ninoy Aquino Station 55 percent complete, and the Dr. Santos Station 60 percent complete.

“We remain optimistic that we can start commercial operations of Phase 1 by the fourth quarter of 2024 highlighting the (string of) milestones being achieved by our team. The target this year is to complete all civil and equipment installation works so we can focus on commissioning the entire line by next year,”  Juan F. Alfonso, LRMC president and chief executive, said.

“Despite the challenges we have encountered, we remain focused and committed to deliver on our promise of upgrading the commuter experience,” he added.

Since taking over LRT-1 operations and maintenance in 2015, the LRMC has invested over P30 billion in capital improvement projects to steadily improve the LRT-1 system and achieve substantial progress with the construction of the Cavite Extension.
