Batangas LNG project secures green light from fisheries management group

AG&P International Pte. Ltd. in March this year obtained approval by the City Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (CFARMC) to house its Ilijan, Batangas liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal as the facility becomes operational this year.

AG&P said the CFARMC has passed a resolution supporting the construction, commissioning and operation of the LNG terminal given the facility’s potential for community and livelihood development in Batangas City and neighboring municipals.

The authority came in the form of a special council meeting where it was resolved that the development and industrialization along its municipal waters will help in the economic growth of Batangas City given the necessity to address the thinning supply of natural gas needed by power generating plants in the region.

“We will work in collaboration with the CFARMC towards our shared responsibilities for our fishing communities to enable diverse livelihood and income opportunities while simultaneously bringing clean energy into the country and improving the quality of life for many thousands of Filipinos,” said Anupam Ahuja, AG&P Group senior vice president for strategic services.

The government created the Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Management Council in all local government units to institutionalize the participation of fisherfolks and other resource users in community-based planning and implementation of policies and programs for the management, conservation, development and protection of fisheries and aquatic resources of municipal waters across the country.

The soon completed AG&P LNG terminal is expected to fuel San Miguel Corporation’s 1,200 megawatt Ilijan power plant.

Apart from AG&P, FGEN LNG Corporation and its partner, BW LNG are similarly developing their own terminal projects also set to begin operations this year, the Department of Energy said.

There are five other proponents looking to set up their own terminals, including Samat LNG Corp., Luzon LNG Terminal Inc., Energy World Gas Operations Philippines, Inc., Shell Energy Philippines, Inc. and Vires Energy Corp.
