P70 per kilo seized sugar soon sold in Kadiwa, select supermarkets

The government projects completing within the month the legal aspect of the plan to sell seized sugar at P70 per kilogram in government-led Kadiwa rolling stores and in some grocery chains that volunteered their shelf space, according to the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA).

“There are supermarkets and grocery chains who volunteered to give Kadiwa a small space to sell agricultural commodities at Kadiwa prices. We are finalizing the steps since big supermarket chains volunteer a space for free. They will provide shelves to become Kadiwa outlets that will not only sell sugar but other commodities as well,” Pablo Azcona, acting SRA administrator, said.

Items sold in Kadiwa stores are subsidized to lower the price of goods.

The SRA said an initial 4,000 metric tons or 4 million kilograms were approved for sale through the Kadiwa.

Another 6,000 MT in storage but requiring tests consistent with food safety were to be donated or sold through Kadiwa.

In the National Capital Region, refined sugar retails for P86 to P110 a kilogram. Washed sugar sells from P82 to P95 a kilogram while brown sugar sells from P78 to P95 a kilogram.

SRA mill site monitoring show the composite price of raw sugar at P3,177.35 per 50-kilogram bag.
