NGCP bares projects nearing completion this year

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Thursday bared the near completion of the Hermosa-San Jose 500 kilovolt (kV) transmission line project in Bataan and Zambales, the Cebu-Negros-Panay stage 3 backbone project, the Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay transmission line project, and the Cebu-Bohol interconnection project.

This developed as it also disclosed having thus far invested P300 billion worth of upgrades since taking over transmission operations from the government in 2009.

In a statement, NGC said the P300 billion worth of investments the past 14 years relates to 3,729 circuit-kilometers of transmission lines, 28 new substations and an additional 31,190 megavolt amperes (MVA) of transformer capacity installed across the system.

Among the most recent relates to the P52 billion Mindanao-Visayas interconnection project energized only last April but expected to provide a more reliable and sustainable transmission service as well as promote energy resource sharing in the region.

NGCP also said its Transmission Development Plan details priority projects boosting the transmission backbone and alternative transmission corridors and develop resiliency policies for power transmission facilities.

It will also start new projects this year already approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission such as the Batangas-Mindoro interconnection project. Such projects were meticulously planned by engineers and updated annually to take into account the needs of every single area in the country.

“We continue to be hopeful that improvements in all three sectors of the power delivery system are in sync with each other, so that one sector is not made to be the sole or principal solution to challenges in the other sectors,” NGCP said in its statement.

“This is a system and to make it robust, resilient and responsive to the needs of a fast-growing economy, the direction and coordination must be clear, equally implemented and objectively pursued. Our stakeholders can be assured that we remain committed to improving and delivering reliable power transmission services,” NGCP said.
