NGCP vows within-year completion of MVIP project

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Wednesday gave assurance the 450 megawatt (MW) Mindanao-Visayas interconnection project (MVIP) will be completed within the year as scheduled.

“Right now, transfer capacity is at 122.5 MW. We’re hoping to double that before the end of the month to 225 MW and by third quarter it will be full capacity,” said Cynthia Alabanza, NGCP spokesperson, at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum.

According to Alabanza, certain areas such as Cebu are a challenge even as the Mindanao aspect of the program is almost complete.

“We will make sure it will be completed by the third quarter,” she said.

The MVIP relates to a 184 circuit-kilometer (ckm) high-voltage direct current submarine transmission line connecting the power grids of Mindanao and the Visayas with a full transfer capacity of 450 MW expandable to as much as 900 MW.

The project includes converter stations in both regions and more than 500 ckm of overhead lines facilitating the flow of electricity.

NGCP had said the project will improve power stability and reliability across the country and attenuate instances of power interruptions while also promoting energy resource sharing as excess power generated from one area can now be transmitted to the various regions.
