The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) has met with the provincial government of Cebu to discuss the possible construction of a regional fish port (RFP) in the province.
The PFDA said last week’s meeting was seen helping more fisherfolk in the region further boost the economy of Cebu and help lift the production of commercial and municipal fisheries as well as aquaculture in the province.
It also said the project is one of the priority projects of the current administration.
Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia stressed the fish port must be strategically situated and readily accessible by fishing vessels from neighboring provinces in Central Visayas like Bohol, Siquijor and Negros Oriental.
The agency estimated such a facility requires eight hectares to houset the RFP.
At present, existing RFPs include Bulan in Sorsogon; Sual in Pangasinan; General Santos; Davao; Zamboanga; Lucena in Quezon Province; Iloilo; and Navotas.
Philippine Statistics Authority data show that as of end-2022, Cebu produced 44,806.38 metric tons of fish products or 1.03 percent of the 4.34 million MT produced nationally for the period.
