DOTr bares plastic card blanks for driver’s license weekly to end shortage

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista is urging the newly-appointed head of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to address quickly issues that have since hounded the agency such as the license cards and motor vehicle plate shortages.

“I know [Vigor] Mendoza will be able to do the job. He has all the qualifications, training and experience,” Bautista said of the new LTO chief.

Mendoza has served as board member at the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board. His appointment as top man at LTO was announced just last week.

“He knows the problem and its possible solution,” he quickly added of the lawyer who now heads one of the most important offices under his command.

With Mendoza’s expertise in the transport sector, the issues that refused to leave the LTO in peace will be addressed within the year, according to Secretary Bautista.

“With the finalization of the procurement of plates, we took their delivery last week and also today. As for the license cards, that should soon be resolved as well,” Bautista said in mixed Filipino.

Bautista and his chief at LTO on Tuesday received 5,000 plastic card blanks for the driver’s license from Banner Plasticard, Inc. as part of its commitment to deliver 1 million cards in the next 60 days.

The company will deliver batches of 5,000 such plastic cards every week thereafter as part of its commitment to deliver 5.2 million plastic cards by year end, Bautista said.
