The price of electricity at the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) in Luzon and the Visayas eased in August, according to the
IEMOP or the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines.
The decrease, the IEMOP said, was traced to lower demand for power and manifested as the availability higher of reserves
during the month. As of 17 August, the price per kilowatt hour (kWh) at the WESM in Luzon and the Visayas averaged P5.43, which is 4 percent lower than in July when this averaged P5.66 per kWh.
The IEMOP said demand in the two major islands during the period eased by 0.9 percent to 11,283 megawatts (MW) from 11,386 MW.
Supply in Luzon and the Visayas during the period increased by 3.2 percent to 15,396 MW from 14,917 MW as power reserves also went up 17 percent to 479 MW from 408 MW.
But while WESM rates in Luzon and the Visayas eased, the rates in Mindanao went up instead.
The price per kWh in Mindanao averaged P4.86 or a 28 percent increase from July at only P3.79 per kWh.
Demand for power in Mindanao during the period also went up 3 percent to 1,866 MW from 1,808 MW and supply rose 0.22 percent to 3,165 MW from 3,158 MW as reserves dropped 8 percent to 112 MW from 122 MW.The decrease in price was traced to lower demand for power amid the higher availability of reserves.
