Isla Mactan-Cordova Corp., a unit of publicly-listed Vivant Corp., on Wednesday projected completing the country’s first utility-scale seawater desalination plant in Cordova, Mactan in Cebu by year’s end.
The desalination plant, which can initially generate 20 million liters of potable water a day, is operated and managed by IMCC, a subsidiary of Vivant Hydrocore Holdings Inc.
IMCC was awarded a 25-year contract to supply desalinated water to the Metropolitan Cebu Water District.
Jess Anthony Garcia, IMCC president and CEO, said the initial 20 million liter daily production meets the average daily consumption of 20,000 Cebuano households.
He said plant capacity is expandable to 50 million liters a day using reverse osmosis technology. Full commercial operations begin early next year also. The project addresses Cebu’s water supply deficit and at the same time allow its severely extracted groundwater aquifers to replenish naturally.
Plant construction in partnership with the Cordova local government, is being undertaken by WaterMatic Philippines, a joint venture company of Vivant and WaterMatic International of Israel, acknowledged world leader in water production, conservation and technology.
