The Department of the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has scheduled a 19 October 2023 public hearing of the proposed 250-megawatt Gened-2 hydropower plant in Kabugao, Apayao.
At stake is the environmental compliance certificate being sought by project developer Pan Pacific Renewable Power Philippines Corp. at a cost of P21.86 billion.
The developer has since said the project will help ensure the country’s energy security by increasing the installed capacity and expanding the renewable energy share to attain the target 35 percent RE share in the power mix by 2023 and 50 percent by 2040.
The Environmental Management Bureau said interested parties need to confirm their attendance or participation and submit their opinion in a position paper three days prior to the hearing.
The Gened-1 hydro project has an installed capacity of 150MW requiring capital cost of P19.8 billion.
According to the DOE, the total installed capacity from hydro sources stands at 3,745 MW or 13.3 percent of the aggregate 28,258 MW installed on-grid capacity in the country, excluding battery storage and diesel-battery hybrid systems.
