West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc. bared plugging more than 27,000 pipe leaks as of the third quarter this year, bringing the total leak repairs to 485,319 since its re-privatization in 2007.
The leaks detected and repaired during the period were located mostly in Quezon City, Caloocan and Manila.
Maynilad said leak repair is a vital component of its non-revenue water (NRW) management program which seeks to reduce the physical and commercial water losses to the barest minimum.
“Given the need to recover more water supply for distribution during El Niño, we have increased our manpower complement this year so we can swiftly implement leak detection and repairs. We thank the various local government units for likewise speeding up the issuance of the required permits for these activities,” said Randolph Estrellado, Maynilad chief operating officer.
This year alone, Maynilad set aside P4 billion to pursue its NRW management program. Of the amount, P449 million was for leak repairs.
Aside from detection and repairs, the program also covers selective pipe replacement, network diagnostics, establishment of district metered areas and replacement of old water meters.
Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base serving the cities of Manila, Quezon City, Makati, Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon as well as the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario in Cavite Province.
