Uninterrupted raw water supply despite 2-month Angat hydropower shutdown

The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System – Corporate Office (MWSS-CO), assured of uninterrupted supply of raw water from Angat Dam which has scheduled a total plant shutdown of its hydro power facilities until January next year.

MWSS-CO said the Angat Hydropower Corp., which operates the Angat Hydroelectric Power Plant (AHEPP), will undertake major repairs and rehabilitation of its penstock in conjunction with the modernization of power plant equipment.

The agency said the AHEPP will require a total plant shutdown of 61 days starting from 6 November to 6 January 2024 to lengthen the plant’s lifespan and ensure a stable water supply for irrigation as well.

A comprehensive guideline on the operation of the Angat Dam spillway and low-level outlet has been created with Maynilad and Manila Water to ensure water supply for domestic use and for irrigation during the shutdown.

The agency noted water level at Angat Dam of 209.48 meters approximates the normal high-water level of 210-meters or enough to supply raw water to service areas in Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite and Rizal province.

AHEPP is a joint-venture between SMC Global Power, which operates and maintains the facility, and Korea Water Resources Corp. which provides technical services.

The hydro power plant has total generating capacity of 218 megawatts comprising of four main units and three auxiliary units.
