West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc. has completed the reactivation of 20 deep wells that now allows it to supply an additional 19.38 million liters per day (MLD) of potable water to businesses and households.
The additional supply effectively boosted water availability for around 90,000 customers in Caloocan, Quezon City, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Parañaque, Bacoor, Cavite City and Imus.
Maynilad then targets generating 32 MLD from groundwater sources by end of the year, enough to supply the water requirements of 175,000 customers.
Groundwater is among other sources that Maynilad taps for distribution on those times when supply from the usual sources are limited.
Maynilad has set aside P1 billion to reactivate the deep wells and build new ones in various points within the concession given that El Niño is seen impacting the availability of water supply this year until the first half of 2024.
“Coordination with local government units and several homeowners’ associations is ongoing to facilitate the opening of more deep wells in the succeeding months. We are on track to complete the reactivation and construction of more than 60 deep wells” this year, said Randolph Estrellado, Maynilad chief operating officer.
The company has expanded its portfolio of alternate water sources to generate more supply and reduce over-reliance on traditional sources like Angat Dam and Laguna Lake. Apart from groundwater, Maynilad also draws raw water from rivers in Cavite using modular treatment plants and converts the treated effluent of its sewage treatment plants into potable water.
Maynilad operates the largest private water concession in the country serving the cities of Manila, Quezon City, Makati, Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon as well as the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario in Cavite Province.
