Merbau Corp., the renewable energy arm of JG Summit Holdings Inc., is keen on pursuing more renewable energy ventures within and outside the Gokongwei Group after the completion of its 13.811-megawatt (MW) rooftop solar energy project in Batangas City.
Patrick Henry Go, Merbau president and chief executive officer, said they are assessing a portfolio of projects in partnership with Robinsons Land Corp. and its malls and industrial warehouses, the Universal Robina Corp. (URC) and its manufacturing plants and distribution channels, and budget airline Cebu Pacific.
“We also plan to expand our RE portfolio to be able to deliver power to eligible end-users outside of the group in our commitment to solidify our dedication to sustainable and innovative energy solutions,” Go further said.
It was noted the Batangas project is one of the largest solar rooftop installations in the country to date as it covers the rooftop of nine buildings.
Construction started in August 2022 and rolled out in two phases with the first 5.8-MW completed in December 2022 and the second 8-MW facility completed in April.
Merbau Corp. said the project will provide a significant portion of the energy requirements of the group’s petrochemical complex that houses JG Summit Olefins Corporation’s manufacturing plant and the packaging division of URC.
The company said the project will result to a significant reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as it generates estimated energy savings of 17.8 gigawatt-hours annually and projected GHG emissions cut of 17,000 tons more each year from both JGSOC and URC warehouses and building offices within the petrochemical complex.
Go also said Upgrade Energy Philippines was tapped as engineering, procurement and construction contractor.
