Harbor Star Shipping Services, Inc. said Thursday it has formalized its commitment to the Bislak River Restoration Project with an agreement with the provincial government of Ilocos Norte.
The Bislak River Restoration project, aimed at avoid flooding in low-laying areas, particularly the towns of Vintar and Baccara, is aligned with the Department of Public Works and Highways’ dredging master plan.
Harbor Star said the river restoration initiative will span 1.5 kilometers of the river mouth and navigational access. Additionally, it will cover a 26-kilometerstretch of the Bislak River dredging zone, encompassing five dredging sites.
The provincial government of Ilocos Norte earlier said it will not be spending taxpayers’ money for the Bislak River project. The local government unit said it private sector contractors will pay for all the expenses in exchange for sand and other materials they extract from the heavily-silted river.
