Filipino-Norwegian renewable energy producer looks beyond hydro to solar

Renewable energy developer SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP) looks to add 10 megawatts up to 60 megawatts more to an existing solar portfolio but is unsure where to deploy it until events turn definite hopefully early next year.

Joseph Yu, SNAP president and chief executive officer, told reporters SNAP is confident of the technology making economic sense but is not so sure where or to whom to sell the power to.

“We’re pretty confident with the technology but we still need to make sure we can sell the output before we build it,” Yu said of the proposed floating solar project they have in mind.

According to Yu, it’s possible to put up such a facility again in Magat, Isabela where they already have a 200-kilowatt floating solar power plant but could build the same in Benguet province as well.

SNAP is also interested in land-based solar projects to diversify its portfolio that at present consists mostly of hydro power projects.

“We feel solar capacity is highly complementary of hydropower plants,” Yu said.

SNAP’s other power generation facilities include the 388-megawatt plant on the border of Isabela and Ifugao and the 8.5 megawatt Maris in Isabela which are hydroelectric power plants and the recently completed 24-MW battery energy storage system in Magat, Isabela.

SNAP is a joint venture between Aboitiz Power Corp. and the Norwegian renewable energy producer SCATEC ASA.
