Wawa bulk water project on track to 2025 completion

Prime Infrastructure Capital’s WawaJVCo Inc., said the second phase of the Wawa bulk water supply project in Rizal Province is on track to begin commercial operations by the end of 2025.

WawaJVCo Inc. said the project is over 70 percent complete as of this month, with the 85-meter roller-compacted concrete dam seen completed in a few months followed by the completion of the rest of the plant.

The project is considered the largest privately-led water supply infrastructure project in the country. When operational, the dam will have a yearlong water supply capacity of over 700 million liters per day (MLD,) benefiting residents of the greater Metro Manila area, including Rizal province.

Apart from providing a reliable water supply source, the Upper Wawa Dam is expected to help mitigate flooding in the downstream areas and localities of the Marikina River.

“The exceptional construction pace at Upper Wawa Dam showcases Prime Infra’s commitment to delivering on our commitments in developing water supply infrastructure at this scale. We are pleased that the project continues to be materially ahead of schedule. We take great pride in ensuring that we sustain this pace and do so safely by 2025,” said Guillaume Lucci, Prime Infra president and chief executive officer, in a statement.

Lucci added the completion of the project will increase Manila Water’s capacity by over 30 percent of its current water supply allocation from the Angat Dam of approximately 1,600 MLD.

The Upper Wawa Dam is capable of delivering over 700 MLD of water by end 2025, with the project’s first phase – the Tayabasan Weir, having already delivered 80 MLD since it began operations. Wawa JV Co. is a joint venture between Prime Infra and businessman Oscar Violago’s San Lorenzo Ruiz Builders Group.
