Maynilad laying down P2.7B new pipes over four years to limit non-revenue water loss

Maynilad Water Services Inc. is spending P2.7 billion over four years to limit its high water loss and bring down its non-revenue water (NRW) in the City of Manila.

The West Zone concession operator said the city has a high water loss rate due to its aging pipe network and rampant illegal connections.

Maynilad said the bulk or P2.4 billion will be spent on pipe replacement, P151 million will address leak repairs and the remaining P190 million for network diagnostics and leak detection, among other activities.

Manila is host to the oldest sections of the pipe network that the concession inherited from government. Maynilad has already replaced 701 kilometers of old pipes since 2007, said Randolph Estrellado, Maynilad chief operating officer.

According to Estrellado, pipe replacement picked up pace with the assistance of the local government of Manila by promptly issuing permits and by managing traffic at pipe replacement and leak repair project sites.

Maynilad said the P2.7 billion allocated for the City of Manila is part of the P16.5 billion NRW management program of the company until 2027 to further reduce water losses in its entire concession area.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines serving the cities of Manila, Quezon City, Makati, Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon as well as the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario in Cavite Province.
