The Philippine Statistics Authority has approved a resolution that will facilitate, among others, the collection, analysis and dissemination of verified media killings and other acts of violence against media practitioners, trade unionists and human rights advocates.
The resolution, which will carry out an indicator contained in the United Nations’ Sustainability Development Goal, will finally gather official Philippine data on media killings and other human rights violations.
PSA said the data gathering was in support of the UN SDG indicator 16.10.1 on killing, kidnapping, enforced disappearance, arbitrary detention and torture of journalists, trade unionists and human rights advocates over a 12-month period.
The Philippines has been listed in the 2023 Global Impunity Index of New York-based media watchdog Committee to Protect Journalists as one of the most dangerous places for media practitioners, where perpetrators of journalists’ murders continue to evade justice.
The PSA said it will work closely with the Commission on Human rights and the member agencies of the the Interagency Committee on Security, Justice, and Peace Statistics to ensure the accomplishment of the undertaking.
