Philippine-listed renewable energy firm ACEN Corp. said Tuesday its unit, ACEN Australia, signed a cooperation agreement with Marubeni Asian Power Singapore for the joint development of a 200 megaWatt/400 MW-hour battery energy storage system in New South Wales.
The deal requires investment of around AUD250 million, which will be evenly split between ACEN Australia and Marubeni Asian Power. The battery energy storage system project is expected to be completed by 2025.
New England Solar, ACEN Australia’s inaugural project, is a 720 MW solar and battery project that is being built in stages. The first 400 MW block started commercial operations in 2023. Construction for stage 2 starts this year.
“ACEN has a bold strategy to help Australia transition to a clean energy future, and we are excited by this partnership with Marubeni. Battery storage will play a critical role in bringing renewable energy projects to life and clean electricity for Australian homes and businesses,” said David Pollington, ACEN Australia managing director, in a statement.
ACEN Australia’s renewable platform represents more than 1 gigaWatt capacity of large-scale renewable energy generation under construction and in operation and more than 8 GW capacity in the development pipeline, with a portfolio including solar, wind, battery, and pumped hydro projects across Australia.
