Cebu manufacturer generates a third of power requirement from solar

Cebu-based construction chemicals company Treasure Island Industrial Corp. (TIIC) has expanded its rooftop solar facility by 727 kilowatts at its manufacturing plant in Mandaue City in Cebu. The 11,000 square-meter rooftop facility is in partnership with Vivant Energy Corp. subsidiary, Corenergy.

The additional capacity at its iPak packaging plant in Mandaue allows the business to save on emissions of 527 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

In 2019, iPak completed the first phase of the rooftop solar project with the installation of a 1,345-kW system supplied by Corenergy.

iPak now generates 2,074 kW from the solar rooftop that supports 35 percent of its energy demand.

“We are very satisfied with our partnership with Corenergy because we have a cheaper energy source, one that is clean and friendly to the environment,” said Daniel Ong, TIIC president and chief executive officer.

iPak caters to both local and international markets and specializes in the manufacturing of flexible plastic packaging such as stand-up pouches, 3-side seal bags, cap seals, labels, polyethylene bags and collation shrink film. It also produces rigid plastic packaging such as microwaveable containers and thermoformed clamshells and trays.

Vivant Energy is into energy distribution and generation, retail electricity supply, and energy-related engineering solutions.

Vivant facilities generate 382 megawatts of renewable and non-renewable power and considered as one of the largest power providers in off-grid areas.
