    Power industry services may not be cheap but they honor EPIRA law against monopolies – ERC data

    None of the large power generation companies have breached the government-set limits on the capacity and market share of each one to ensure against dominance by any of the existing players, the Energy Regulatory Board (ERC) reported on Wednesday.

    But the Aboitiz Equity Ventures (AEV), the holding company of the Aboitiz Group with interest in power, financial services, food, infrastructure, data science and even artificial intelligence, leads a small group of large-scale entrepreneurs with installed generating capacity (ICL) of 5,745,270 kilowatts and only 22.47 percent of the market.

    By law, no enterprise and related units is allowed to own more than 30 percent of the installed generating capacity anywhere in the country and in no case are enterprises allowed to control more than 30 percent of the market under the Electric Power Industry Reforms Act of 2001.

    At the national level where the ICL had been set this year at 25,567,270 kilowatts, the AEV supplies only 5,745,221 kilowatts and lords over on only 22.5 percent of the market. 

    In Luzon where AEV has 25.8 percent of market, it has installed capacity reaching only 4,633,821 kw. In the Visayas where it controls 13.8 percent of market, installed capacity is only 470,900 kilowatts and in Mindanao where it has 15.3 percent of market its installed capacity is only 640,500 kilowatts.

    San Miguel Global Power, the next biggest industry player, has built an electricity enterprise generating 5,057,360 kilowatts but only 19.8 percent of the national market. Of this number, 4,576,800 kilowatts equal to 25.5 percent of market are installed in Luzon, 140,670 kilowatts accounting for only 4.1 percent of market is installed in the Visayas and 339,890 kilowatts or 8.12 percent of market have been installed in Mindanao.

    The third largest player is Lopez Group member First Gen Corp. whose installed capacity across the archipelago total 3,392,890 kilowatts but only account for 13.3 percent of the market. Its installed capacity in Luzon is only 2,510,500 kilowatts and only 14 percent of market. In the Visayas its installed capacity reaches 827,190 kilowatts or 24.2 percent of market and in Mindanao only 55,200 kilowatt capacity at 1.32 percent of market.

    The Manila Electric Co. has installed capacity of 1,380,920 kilowatts or 5.40 percent of market of which 578,700 kilowatts or 3.22 percent is in Luzon, 802,220 kilowatts or 23.47 percent in the Visayas but none at all in Mindanao.
