Alsons subsidiary seeking ERC approval to connect Bohol diesel plant to the Visayas grid

Alsons Consolidated Resources Inc. (ACR) subsidiary Conal Holdings Corp. (CHC) is seeking Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) approval  to connect its power plant in Bohol to the Visayas grid.

The petition requires the construction of a dedicated point-to-point limited transmission facility costing USD2.28 million or P112.11 million, connecting its diesel power plant to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ (NGCP) Ubay substation.

In a filing approved for posting by the ERC, CHC said up to 95.2 megawatts in in-island backup diesel power comes to the grid through the NGCP’s Ubay substation.

According to ACR, the power project is implemented in two phases with the first 57.57-MW to be energized within the year and the full capacity of 85.17 MW scheduled to come online by 2026.

Also, the project is expected to stabilize Bohol’s power supply and act as the island’s backup power in ensuring 24/7 supply even in the event Bohol is isolated from the Visayas grid due to natural disasters as has occurred in the past.

System impact studies conducted with the NGCP have determined the proposed connection to the Ubay substation as technically acceptable prompting the ERC to set a pre-trial conference on 8 May 2024.

Apart from the Bohol diesel plant, ACR is also developing renewable energy projects including the 14.5 MW Siguil hydro power plant in Sarangani, the 37.8 MW hybrid Siayan hydro-solar power plant in Zamboanga del Norte; and the 42 MW Bago hydro power plant in Negros Occidental.

ACR has an energy portfolio with aggregate capacity of 468 MW serving over eight million people across 14 cities and 11 provinces.
