    Two-day transport strike rated inconsequential

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Tuesday said the two-day strike by transport groups Manibela and Piston proved unsuccessful and by this token inconsequential.

Transport Secretary Jaime J. Bautista said the driver-and-operator duo succeeded only in creating traffic congestion in some areas.

“They were successful in creating traffic. But we were able to prove that the government is ready to address transport issues,”  Bautista on the sidelines of the Land Transportation Office’s (LTO) 112th founding anniversary.

The transport chief said the protesters may be held liable for such violations as obstruction of traffic once the LTO, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) complete a review of the strike.

“Kung anuman ang ginawa nilang kasalanan ay re-reviewhin yan ng government agencies,” Bautista said in Filipino.

He stressed while the protesters have every right to air their grievance, this should not be to the detriment of the riding public and motorists.

“Ang nakita namin ay obstruction which created traffic. Mayroon naman silang right na ipaglaban ang kanilang karapatan, pero wag naman sanang ma-apektuhan ang travelling public,”  Bautista explained.
