Luzon briefly under yellow alert on Monday

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Monday placed the Luzon grid under yellow alert status anew.

The NGCP raised the alert level from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. as 16 power plant units, including one with de-rated capacity, resulted in the unavailability of 1,406.8 megawatts (MW) of power in the system.

The Luzon grid has been on red alert five times and under yellow alert 15 times since April this year, the NGCP said.

As for the Visayas grid, it has been under red alert five times and under yellow alert 10 times during the period. The Mindanao grid was under yellow alert only twice.

Yellow alerts are issued when power reserve in the grid is low. Red alerts are declared when actual power supply against demand is insufficient and power interruptions are imminent.

Available capacity in the Luzon grid Monday was only 15,167 MW compared to peak demand of 13,714 MW.

The yellow alert in Luzon lifted by 4:31 p.m. Monday.

Also, the Energy Regulatory Commission expects to release within the week the initial result of its investigation into unforced outages at six power generation plants that led to a spate of power alerts.
