Prime Infra considers developing floating solar units

Prime Infrastructure Capital Inc., already into ground-based solar power generation, is open to expanding the venture into floating solar technology since the Razon Group has assets using water bodies.

“We’re considering floating solar. It all comes down to economics and grid access and so on but we’re absolutely open to floating solar and we support it very much,” Guillaume Lucci, Prime Infra president and chief executive officer, told reporters at the sidelines of the inauguration of a 64-megawatt solar power plant in Tanauan, Batangas.

Prime Infra wholly owned subsidiary Prime Solar Solutions Corp. said the Tanauan solar project that broke ground in April last year uses advanced execution, digital twin, drone verification of progress, optimized string sizing and 24/7 quality assurance and control monitoring both at factory and at site.

The facility has a 50-MW power supply agreement with the Manila Electric Co. for 20 years with the balance of its output sold to the national grid.

“We are thankful to our offtaker Meralco. We have a long-term contract to fulfill and we look forward to doing just that and hopefully connecting this plant as quickly as possible to distribute energy and release pressure on the grid,” Lucci said.

Lucci said they are also working on expanding the existing Tanauan Solar for another 10 to 12 MW scheduled for completion within the year.

“We are certainly evaluating the possibility of building more solar plants. As you know, we are focused on renewable energy and solar is of course a big part of that,” Lucci said.

Prime Solar has a solar facility in Tanauan, Batangas and in Maragondon, Cavite jointly supplying 128 MW to 84,000 households, displacing over 100,000 tons of coal per year.

Lucci said an expanded project another 10 to 12 MW is eyed for the Cavite solar project.

Prime Infra is focused on building energy assets and access to clean water as well as waste management.
