Maynilad draws 15 percent of its power requirements from renewable energy

Maynilad Water Services Inc. has widened its use of renewable energy by 15 percent by partnering with MPower, the retail arm of the Manila Electric Co.

Under the partnership, MPower supplies Maynilad water treatment plants at the La mesa Compound in Quezon City and at Barangay Putatan in Muntinlupa as well as its pumping station in Pasay, Las Pinas, Quezon City and Paranaque with power generated from solar and biomass sources.

The shift to 15 percent clean energy allows Maynilad to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions nearly 18,000 tons a year equivalent to 4,284 gas-fueled cars off the roads.

“At Maynilad, we are committed to sustainable practices and reducing our carbon footprint. Increasing our use of renewable energy by 15 percent is a significant step towards our goal of carbon neutrality by 2037,” said Ramoncito Fernandez, Maynilad president and chief executive officer.

Maynilad commits to reduce its carbon emissions further over the next five years as it widens its renewable energy use to 30 percent in 2025 and 40 percent by 2027.

Maynilad started reducing the use of conventional power from the grid in 2021 when it tapped 2 megawatts from solar farms to power the requirements of the La Mesa Treatment Plant 1 and several pumping stations at the La Mesa Compound.

Maynilad serves the water requirements of Manila, Quezon City, Makati, Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon as well as Cavite, Bacoor and Imus and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario in Cavite province.
